Theory behind mesh denisty in computational programs

I need the different types of meshes that can be used within the ABAQUS program, as well as the most appropriate mesh and mesh density to use when configuring a total knee replacement prosthetic. A sensitivity study about the mesh density (which size mesh to use), boundary conditions and loads used when computationally analysing the knee (of a male) in a stationary position.
