What did the practitioner do well? In what areas can the practitioner improve?
At this point in the clinical interview, do you have any compelling concerns? If so, what are they?
What would be your next question, and why?
Then, address the following. Your answers to these prompts do not have to be tailored to the patient in the YMH Boston video.
Explain why a thorough psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent is important.
Describe two different symptom rating scales that would be appropriate to use during the psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent.
Describe two psychiatric treatment options for children and adolescents that may not be used when treating adults.
Explain the role parents/guardians play in assessment.
What did the practitioner do well? In what areas can the practitioner improve?
The practitioner did a good job of establishing rapport with the patient, maintaining an open dialogue, and giving her space to express her concerns without interruption. He was also careful to avoid leading questions and instead let her tell her story in her own words. The practitioner could have done a better job of validating the patient’s feelings and experiences, while also reassuring her that help is available.
At this point in the clinical interview, do you have any compelling concerns? If so, what are they?
At this point in time I would have some level of concern because the patient has expressed worry about feeling disconnected from those around them and not enjoying things she used to enjoy. It appears that she is increasingly depressed which may be reflective of a larger mental health issue or condition.
Explain why a thorough psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent is important.
A thorough psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent is important because it allows practitioners to identify existing psychological conditions such as depression, anxiety disorder or psychosis that might require intervention prior to onset into adulthood when symptoms can become much more complexed and challenging to manage without appropriate interventions being put into place earlier on during childhood development.. This kind of assessment provides an opportunity for early detection so treatment plans can be developed accordingly before symptoms potentially worsen due to lack thereof . Moreover , family dynamics must also be taken into consideration since these issues are often intertwined and many times contribute significantly to individual’s psychosocial functioning .
Describe two different symptom rating scales that would be appropriate to use during the psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent.
Two different symptom rating scales appropriate for use during psychiatric assessments with children/adolescents include: 1) The Children’s Anxiety Scale (CAS), which assesses specific anxieties related problems such as separation anxiety disorder; 2) The Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders & Schizophrenia (K-SADS), which screens for depression symptoms within various age groups ranging from pre-schoolers up through late adolescence years.. Both tools provide detailed information regarding levels severity surrounding various mental health issues thus enabling accurate diagnoses by qualified clinicians who specialize in treating youth patients respectively .
Describe two psychiatric treatment options for children and adolescents that may not be used when treating adults. Two different psychiatric treatment options specifically targeting pediatric populations include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). CBT focuses on helping individuals identify negative thought patterns linked directly towards undesired behaviors associated with their diagnosis whereas EMDR utilizes eye movements intended facilitate trauma processing thus resulting decreased emotional reactions among other outcomes beneficial towards recovery process overall . Although both approaches are effective treatments among adult populations , utilizing them amongst pediatric clients offers unique advantages given developmental nature particular age group .
