Ward Family Case Study
Alex, a nursing student, has selected the Ward Family for home visiting. Mr. Everett Ward is 80 years old, has emphysema and has recently been discharged from the hospital. He has limited mobility due to shortness of breath. Mr. Ward lives with his 76-year-old sister who suffers from osteoarthritis especially in her hands. Miss Ward has recently moved in with her brother and assumed the caregiver role. Alex has just completed her/his home visit with this family. In completing a nursing assessment, one of the observations Alex makes is that Mr. Ward is seeing three different doctors for his health issues. He has been seeing a pulmonary specialist since his discharge from the hospital. He has a family doctor who he has not seen for 5 years. He also has a ‘life-long’ doctor friend who ‘fixes him up’ when he needs anything else. Mr. Ward’s bathroom is filled with prescriptions new and old, some drugs with different doses, and several different drugs that have similar actions. The drugs are prescribed by the varying doctors and some of the drugs Mr. Ward does not even remember or know. There are also a number of over the counter medications and vitamins. Most of them are outdated. Both Mr. Ward and his sister are concerned about his health and are trying to figure out what drugs he should take. He has been trying to comply by taking all of the pills. Miss Ward is very confused about what her brother is to take. She is very frustrated with him and responds by leaving him alone to take ‘whatever.’
a) Select one (1) family nursing diagnosis that summarizes a primary need of the family – not the individual. Use NANDA family-based diagnoses only – not individual NANDA diagnoses. For example, caregiver role strain is not a family diagnosis. Look for NANDA diagnoses that have family in the name of the diagnosis.
b) Identify the strengths that exist in the family
c) Propose four (4) family- based nursing interventions and
d) Provide an evidence informed rationale for each family-based intervention listed above.
Note: Any current nursing diagnosis text book is appropriate for this activity and are excellent for lists of family-based nursing diagnoses and evidence-based interventions (with rationales!). You may propose nursing interventions outlined in the text book however you must clearly reference all of your work.
