Reforming the United Nations Security Council: Regional Approach
In order to reform the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), it is important to understand its history and design. The UN was born out of a need for international cooperation after World War II, and the UNSC was created as an integral part of this system, with veto powers that could overrule any action taken by other nations or organizations. Currently, five permanent members make up the council – China, France, Russia, UK and US – while ten non-permanent members are elected every two years by a two-thirds majority vote in the General Assembly.
