Pathological Conditions Affecting Sexual Responses in Older Adults
Sexual dysfunction can be a difficult issue for many older adults. As people age, physiological and psychological changes may occur that completely alter the sexual experience. Pathological conditions such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to various forms of sexual dysfunction in older adults (Li & Yuen-Tung 2008). Below is an overview of some pathological conditions that may affect the sexual responses in older adults along with how these conditions can be mitigated through nutritional factors, psychological factors, drugs and complementary/alternative medications.

Cancer is one type of pathologic condition which has been associated with decreased libido and erectile dysfunctions among men. Cancer related to prostate or bladder increases the risk for both types of dysfunctions (Wang et al., 2018). Psychological stressors resulting from diagnoses and treatment are also likely to lead to further decreases in libido. In order to improve sexual functioning among individuals affected by cancer it is important for them to receive proper nutrition during treatments as well as psychosocial support from family members or mental health professionals (Wang et al., 2018). Additionally it has been suggested that exercise interventions may help reduce fatigue levels experienced due to cancer treatments which would then potentially increase physical strength needed for engaging in intimate activities (Brundage & Palesh 2014).

Diabetes mellitus is another common pathological condition associated with impaired male sexual response partially due mainly its effects on peripheral nerves leading reduced sensation during ejaculation (Güler et al., 2017). Studies have shown that diabetes reduces testosterone levels which could also result in lower libido levels among men (Güler et al., 2017). Nutrition therapy involving diet modifications such healthy carbohydrate intake while avoiding foods high glycemic index will help maintain blood glucose levels thereby reducing nerve damage caused by hyperglycemia helping improve overall sensations during sex including ejaculation complications arising due to diabetes Mellitus(Leblanc et al., 2019) . Mental health professionals should work with patients individually or through group sessions discussing topics such as their goals regarding improved quality of life after being diagnosed with diabetes so that they feel empowered about taking charge over their condition rather than feeling helpless about having a chronic illness Lifestyle modifications such as physical activity paired with dietary interventions have been shown useful improving erectile functions among men suffering from Diabetes Mellitus(Xu et al., 2020) .

Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for premature death rates increasing every year worldwide leaving many older adult without partners making up 25% population aged 60-69 years old.(Heiman&Meston 2016 ). Even those who do still have partners might suffer from decreased interest due fear injury or discomfort during intercourse because heart disease affects ability engage physically strenuous activities resulting decrease availability energy resources leading low engagement desired behaviors.( Heiman&Meston 2016 ) Thus it is suggested combining medication therapies prescribed by physician along lifestyle changes like regular aerobic exercises appropriate nutrition targets improved cardiovascular functioning accompanied reduction anxiety symptoms better overall sexuality performance particularly stimulating feelings desire arousal orgasm when desired.( Heiman&Meston 2016 ).Drugs like phosphodiesterase inhibitors Sildenafil citrate tadalafil vardenafilhave proven be effective treating cases erectile dysfunctions linked cardiovascular diseases but must consulted doctor prior use establish correct dosage appropriate individual’s needs.(Montorsietal2005)

Neurological disorders causing damages critical regions brain spine autonomic nervous system impair motor skills coordination balance movement sense touch vision hearing thus affecting daily lives especially when comes sexuality sexually transmitted infections STIs .(Chiu 2014 ) Psychologists recommend providing counseling educate potential risks developing spreading STIs addition implementing safety methods prevent transmission virus partner.( Chiu 2014 ) Nutritional interventions focusing increased protein intake essential fatty acids vitamins E B12 omega 3 supplementations coupled psychotherapeutic strategies cognitive behavioral therapy CBT mindfulness meditation calming breathing exercises found helpful improving quality symptoms neuropathology illnesses reducing distress level impaired functions restoring mood positive outlook future wellbeing consequently enhancing pleasure orgasms meanwhile reducing pain neuropathic origin often experienced patients suffering neuronal pathology diseases e g multiple sclerosis ALS Parkinson’s amyotrophic lateral sclerosis etc .( Ouellette2016)(Peretz 2019 ) Complementary Alternative Medicine CAM therapies acupuncture massage yoga relaxation techniques Tai chi Qi Gong meditation practices herbal remedies Ayurveda medicine traditionally used East Asia centuries ago recently established evidence base western society promoting mind–body modalities explained Western medical terms described scientific literature showing beneficial effects reestablish equilibrium body regulating hormones neurotransmitters immune cells improving stamina managing stress creating sense happiness serenity satisfaction joy relaxation achieving optimal functionality allowing elderly engage fully satisfying sexual relationships .( Sokejima 2011)(Fauconneauetal2014)

However there are various approaches including integrative therapies that can effectively address these issues if properly implemented on an individual basis; these include nutritional factors, psychological factors and drugs as well drug free methods such as complementary/alternative medicine disciplines.
