In comparison Aspirational Standards provide guidance towards a level of expected behaviour while Mandatory Standards establish what behaviours are expected by PMI members regardless if they recognize this behaviour within their own cultural context or not. Aspirational standards focus on specific behaviours such as prompt communication regarding changes in scope while mandatory standards take into account unethical actions such a bribery , discrimination , infringement upon intellectual property rights etc., where any deviation from these rules will result in disciplinary action being taken against those responsible parties As stated earlier aspirational standards provide guidance towards how one should behave hence although it would be encouraged for everyone involved within the project environment adhere to these guidelines it would still remain voluntary .This is different from mandated standards where there is no room for interpretation as failure could lead up potentially lead up to more serious consequences including dismissal from employment /termination from membership status etc.. In contrast, Mandatory Standards referred to as “must” statements define expectations that must be adhered to by all individuals associated with PMI regardless of geographical location or culture.
