The intervention/treatment plan was conducted in an outpatient clinic setting. The clinical team included myself, a practitioner with advanced training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and the client, a young adult female referred for psychotherapy. The client presented with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and difficulty managing emotions. Our goal was to develop a personalized treatment plan that would allow her to gain control over her mental health challenges and achieve successful outcomes.

To guide our practice we drew upon literature related to CBT interventions for youth and young adults struggling with mental health issues including depression and anxiety (Almeida & Young-Hyman, 2013; Norcross et al., 2014). Specifically we focused on how mindful awareness could be used as a way of reducing emotional reactivity and increasing self-control (Kabat-Zinn et al., 1992). We discussed techniques such as breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, yoga postures, body scanning exercises for relaxation, visual imagery for calming the mind or avoiding unhelpful thoughts as well as other strategies aimed at increasing emotional regulation skills.

During our sessions together I observed that the client was able to identify triggers of stress or worrisome thoughts related to past experiences which caused distress or interfered with her functioning. This allowed us to create personalized coping strategies through communication about those experiences using empathy toward herself in order better understand them. We also emphasized self-compassion by encouraging her to recognize that it is normal human experience to have challenging feelings from time-to-time; however it is important not give yourself too much judgement while still acknowledging your own strengths during these times (Neff & Dahm, 2015). Additionally she developed new skills such as recognizing when negative thinking patterns were emerging so she can take proactive steps towards managing them before they become overwhelming (Beck et al., 1979).

Overall working with this client proved positive experience because she was motivated and open minded regarding trying new things which enabled us explore different concepts together more quickly than anticipated during our initial consultation. Additionally there were some emerging themes throughout the process such as the importance of focusing on present moment instead of dwelling on past events that cannot be changed; learning how best calm or distract oneself from difficult feelings; understanding when needing space from others might be beneficial etcetera . All these themes connected back into our original plan around building confidence in ones ability manage their emotions more effectively using CBT methods which ultimately led towards greater successful outcomes for this particular client.
