Convey your enthusiasm for working with the primary age group and how your different experiences have confirmed your desire aswell as given you knowledge on how to engage young learners, helping children to learn including a variety of abilities, planning/marking and feedback, creating a positive learning environment etc from the teaching standards. Part 2 is your chance to talk about your subject strengths and interests aswell as how you've started to prepare for the course. The courses will be interested in your understanding of the realities of primary teaching aswell as understanding of the curriculum and the professional role of the teacher, including safeguarding. To stand out against other candidates, your statement will be about your personal journey to this point so where possible, include specific examples. I might start with some notes on paper first and then type it up onto word to send across to me. Part 1 - 600 words - Why you want to teach - Why you want to teach primary - imagine someone has asked you this question - try to condense your ideas into your first paragraph - Focus on your role as LSA and your understanding of how to tailor learning to individual needs - give an example of how you might do this with the Russian student and perhaps how you've done this whilst teaching PE to a whole class- covered about differentiation at uni? - Focus on your role teaching PE and covering whole classes - your understanding of how to engage students in learning and create a positive learning environment. - How you can help children to learn and develop e.g. where you've seen students struggle and strategies you might use to overcome this including with confidence - could link into PE teaching and also in other subjects e.g. English or maths - link to module about learning and teaching? - End with the kind of teacher you aspire to be Part 2 - Suitability for primary teaching - 400 words - Strengths that you can bring into primary teaching from your degree and subject knowledge - link to experience across both key stages and your own subject strengths and bring in degree modules here to exemplify the theoretical knowledge - the subject knowledge module around core subjects - Your time in the primary school - what it showed you about the realities of teaching- both the rewards and challenges and include any training you did too that will stand you in good stead as a primary teacer - Transferable skills from work and broader experiences- pick 2-3 and explore how you've developed these/their importance in teaching - What you've been doing to start preparing for the course including organising more recent experience 3. Research into primary teaching Refreshing your curriculum knowledge is a good place to start – the courses will be interested in how your own knowledge crosses over with what you will be teaching so it’s a good idea to print out the curriculum and highlight areas of strength and start looking into your gaps in knowledge (don’t worry – everyone comes into teaching with gaps in their knowledge – you can’t know everything but you can make a start on filling in these gaps and you’ll continue to do this over your career).
