Introduction
Social media has become a major form of communication over the past decade. It comprises an ever-expanding variety of platforms, from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram to YouTube. According to Statista (2020), 3.6 billion people use social media worldwide in 2020—an increase of more than 9 percent compared to 2019. This paper will discuss the various effects that social media has on individuals and social systems.

Positive Effects on Individuals
There are many positive effects of using social media for both personal and professional development. One such benefit is its ability to connect people with similar interests together, providing them with support or resources they need (Kang et al., 2014). Additionally, it has been found that individuals who interact with friends online report increased feelings of connectedness as well as improved self-esteem (Vander Wal et al., 2014). Finally, it can also be used to facilitate education by offering online classes or resources for research purposes (Siraj & Huysman, 2018).

Negative Effects on Individuals
Despite the positive aspects of social media use, there are some negative side effects associated with extended usage. For example, studies have shown that excessive use may lead to addictive behaviors like compulsively checking one’s phone or feeling anxious when unable access their accounts (Lin et al., 2016). Furthermore, users may experience cyberbullying which can cause physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches due lack stress hormone cortisol released from being constantly exposed hostile comments over time(Liang & Chiyuen Chang 2013) . In terms mental health issues like depression due lack meaningful interaction offline along feelings alienation overall population especially amongst adolescents is growing concern (Nehmatpour et al., 2017 ).

Social media can also have positive impacts on society at large if utilized wisely by organizations businesses governments etc.. For example its proven effective tool engaging young audiences campaigns raising awareness non profit causes garnering support political movements fundraising initiatives increasing transparency public services influencing consumer behavior marketing products services etc.(Hanna & Rohm 2012 ). It helps promote democracy allowing citizens express opinions ideas share news stories participate activities build connections across different cultures stimulate economy providing new opportunities jobs entrepreneurial ventures etc.(Blanco & Salas 2017 ) .

Slide 6 : Negative Effects On Social Systems Influencing public opinion through changing algorithms fake news spreader bots false advertising privacy violation data mining etc all direct consequences how platform used ill manner which could potentially destabilize existing system order instill fear chaos general public creating biases divides between groups people having detrimental effect society whole(Zannettou et al 2018 ) . Similarly companies exploiting digital workforce poor working conditions low wages incentivizing task completion instead valuing quality work outcomes promotes unethical practices economic disparity gap already present in many parts world(Mueller Gullard 2018) . Lastly it amplifies racism sexism hate speech other forms discrimination normally not acceptable offline thus leading further prejudice intolerance within communities(Ferrara et al2017) .
Slide 7 : Conclusion Despite potential drawbacks discussed above utilization right ways still provides ample advantages encouraging wider participation voices communities better understanding global affairs improving collaboration access information strengthening relationships cultivating empathy virtual environment building bridges beyond physical boundaries even promoting democracy itself ultimately making this world better place live in.(Aguilera 2020 ).
