Phil Spector was an important producer who created an original sound and recording style. Your task is to first, list and describe some of the techniques that Spector developed, and how they affected the sound of his recordings. Then, from the list below choose two songs produced by Phil Spector, and describe how they reflect his stylistic traits.
Answer
Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound
Phil Spector became one the most influential and important producers who came up with original sounds and recording styles. The recording style was known as “wall of sound” which is created when several instruments are used together to create a single sound effect. The Spector used the effect to form a single monaural track instead of being separated into right and left channels (Rooney, 2018). Additionally, he was famous for a powerful way of collaborating with singers and artists to bring the work together. Spector recorded using triple rhythm and multiple wind instruments and guitars. He also played musicians into small and places for each instrument to be heard from different microphones. He also used doubling, where two different instruments play the same line. Specifically, he used doubling to make sound fuller and form dissimilar combinations of instruments.
One of the songs that were produced by Spector is “Baby I Love You” by Ronettes, which presents his important features and styles of production. The song presents a voice of a lead singer and also several instruments that are used which suggests that it could have been recorded in a large space, which is similar to another song also by the Ronettes called “Be My Baby” (Quinn, 2019). The dense sound of the collaborative ensemble can be heard in this song. He also made it a point for listeners to listen to a mass of sound, one of the most important Wall sound features.
Another song that demonstrates Spector’s sound of wall styles is "You've lost that lovin feeling" by The Righteous Brother. Specifically, the song starts in a soft tone and later grows in full sound using different instruments (Quinn, 2019). It also features a strong lead singer, which is one of the successful stylistic traits in his productions.
