Begin with a health issue and a target population
Begin your research question with “How” or “Why”; Note: your question should not be answerable with “Yes” or “No”, and not answerable with a quick Google search
Your question is specific and not vague (see below for examples of vague research questions)
Question 1: Why are many adults classified as obese?
Vagueness: Which adults are we talking about? Worldwide or in a particular country?
Question 2: How do people develop type II diabetes?
Vagueness: There are many characteristics about people that influence diabetes, can you more narrowly define the “people” you are focusing on? e.g. children?, older adults, overweight, race, age, SES, etc.
Question 3: How has CDC addressed population health?
Vagueness: CDC has had many projects to address population health. Should we should focus on one project they completed? Or projects during a particular time period? Projects related to a specific health issue?
Question 4: Why has the percentage of adults classified as obese increased over time?
Vagueness: What time period are we talking about? Are we looking at obesity in all adults or do we want to focus on specific characteristics/demographic of adults?
