Write a summary of the story or text in which you identify the main action or message.
Identify what it is that the author is trying to protest, teach, warn or otherwise make clear with this text. What societal issue or issues are brought up?
Come up with a critical question of your own about each text. Critical questions require us to think. They often start with why, what do you think, find a quote that proves, how, what if, compare/contrast, how does the author, do you agree, have you ever, do you see a connection. They don’t ask stuff like what was the main character name. That doesn’t make the reader think, apply personal knowledge, make predictions or support guesses intelligently.
