One of the most famous projects that comes to mind when discussing success or failure is the Panama Canal. Completed in 1914, the Panama Canal was a difficult undertaking for engineers and workers alike due to the challenging environmental conditions in Central America. Even though progress on construction had already begun by France before it was taken over by the United States, it was still ambitious endeavor with its success far from guaranteed.

The project was successful in that it allowed for better maritime transportation between North America and South America as well as reducing travel time significantly. This meant goods were able to be transported faster at lower costs, making trade easier between continents. To add to this success story, many lives were also saved while travelling across the larger part of oceans otherwise would have been dangerous such as those who crossed from Europe to New York through treacherous waters or storms encountered during long journeys around Cape Horn.

Although there are numerous positives associated with this project, there are negatives too which must be considered when looking at its overall success or failure. For example, during construction many deaths occurred due to sicknesses spread quickly amongst workers in Central American’s tropical climate with few available medicines back then and no real measures taken against mosquitoes known carriers of deadly viruses like malaria and yellow fever – heat stroke being another common cause of death too due its hot environment combined with strenuous labour conditions under poor management . Moreover, displacement caused by this enterprise disenfranchised local communities who faced eviction from their ancestral lands in order for the canal zone area could be created; therefore depriving them livelihoods and culture-based practices generations old – disastrous effects felt even today by many people living close by such project site who remain invisible victims of progress . In addition , Panamanian sovereignty rights were violated after US occupation began shortly after completion prompting a shift in political dynamics subsequently causing problems including Panama’s involvement during Cold War years among other things .

Overall , although some significant challenges were overcome successfully leading towards a successful outcome – reduced transport times ; economic growth through trading activities boosted etc – all these gains must be weighed up against consequences suffered particularly socially speaking given destruction inflicted upon Panamanian people along way without taking into account their human losses experienced while working on such an immense task transforming completely landscapes once populated peacefully since PreColumbian era till present day .
