This is not saying it is a “better” or “worse” way of doing things than we do here in the US, but to see it can be DIFFERENT! This is about understanding
cultural and policy differences in other democratic countries.

Provide 3 things that you learned from this assignment
What 2 questions do you still have
What area of policy or program in the article particularly caught your attention or interest? Such as health care coverage, maternity leave, college costs,
vacations, etc. Explain what you found interesting.
Everyone in the Netherlands and Denmark and Finland are guaranteed 4-5 weeks of vacation a year. How many weeks of paid vacation does your family
(maybe your parents) earn every year? Does your family always use all of the vacation time each year? If it is not used why do you think it is not?
Do you like/dislike the Dutch system of public policy as compared to the US? Explain
In terms of happiness and rankings, Denmark continually ranks near the top. In the article it also showed the US children tend to rank near the bottom in
terms of happiness. Why might the US not typically rank high in terms of happiness despite our wealth and power? Why might Denmark rank higher and how
do policy differences impact these levels? + 200 words
I learned three main things from this assignment. Firstly, that the policies and programs in other democracies, such as in the Netherlands and Denmark, differ significantly from those of the US. Secondly, that these differences can have a significant impact on people’s lives – such as entitlements to paid holiday time or maternity leave. Lastly, that there appears to be a correlation between public policy differences and levels of happiness, with countries such as Denmark consistently ranking highly in terms of happiness levels despite their lower wealth and power compared to many Western nations including the US.
Two questions I still have about this topic is how do these differing policies affect inequalities within countries? For example, does having generous parental benefits result in greater divide between families at higher socio-economic levels than those at a lower one? Additionally, what incentives are there for employers in other countries to offer competitive packages outside of government mandates?
My family earns 3 weeks vacation each year but often don’t use all our time due it being hard for us all (especially my younger siblings)to take off work/school during peak summer months when prices rise so much due to high demand for travel destinations. We could however make better use of our allotted days if we wanted too.. Personally speaking I find it quite unfair that employees here aren’t granted longer holiday entitlement yet only slightly inconvenience ourselves when taking advantage of what we receive. This makes me appreciate greatly how other democracies like those mentioned above guarantee 4-5 week’s vacation each year regardless whilst also providing additional support through public funding schemes like parental leave or free college tuition etc .
Overall I would say I dislike the Dutch systempublic policy relative to theUS , because even though we may appear wealthier on paper ,in practice citizens don’t always benefit financially from living here due lackof tangible forms governmental support apart from basic healthcare coverageor student loans etc .For instance ,the Netherlands guarantees11 national holidays every year whereas Americans typicallyonly receive10 federal ones per annum plus any additional state recognizeddays if they’re lucky ;which effectively means few er opportunitiesfor restful leisure without sacrificing wages or incurring excessive costsfrom vacationing elsewhere .In regards t o Denmark continuallyranking near top concerning happiness statistics;whilst economic prosperityis obviously influential factor ,such high scores likely stemfrom combination factors like strong labor regulations ,low inequalityrates & ample welfare protections all which increase general senseof wellbeing amongst populous who feel secure knowing they’rebeing sufficiently looked after by govt supplements .
