- Freedom
a. According to your own perspective, explain what negative freedoms employees
are entitled to and why they are entitled to them. Engage with at least two of: [Bowie; Kant; the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights] in explaining your reasoning. Provide an example from the Amazon article &
explain how this demonstrates a violation of employees’ negative freedoms. Discuss a company which is
exemplary in granting employees negative freedom and explain why this is a strong example.
b. According to your own perspective, explain what positive freedoms, if any, employees are entitled to and
why they are (or are not) entitled to them. Engage with at least two of: [Bowie; Kant; the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights] in explaining your reasoning. Provide an example of a company which grants employees
positive freedom and explain why this is a strong example. - Building an Ethical Climate
a. Discuss the differences between a values-based and a rules-based corporate
culture and the relative advantages/disadvantages of each. Engage with virtue
ethics and deontology in your response. Be specific.
b. Look up the credo/code of conduct/etc. for a company whose product you have
used or purchased in the last 24 hours. Determine what type of code it is and assess its relative strengths and
weaknesses, using quotes to support the discussion. Be specific and explain your reasoning.
c. Discuss some of the advantages of having a caring ethical climate as opposed to an instrumental one. Be
specific and use examples. - Corporate Social Responsibility
a. According to your own perspective, which of the following: [Carroll’s pyramid;
Triple Bottom Line; corporate citizenship] is the most effective way of assessing whether or not a corporation is
behaving in a socially responsible manner? What is the advantage of this approach over the other two? Why
might someone disagree with you & how can their concerns be alleviated?
b. What are the biggest hurdles one faces in attempting to assess whether or not a company is truly acting in a
socially responsible manner? If this was your job, what methods would you use to overcome these challenges?
