Research and write an essay on pop/rock music from another country/world music tradition. A few examples
include the following, but not limited to: Caribbean calypso; Latin salsa or tango; Brazilian samba; Algerian rai;
Sub-Saharan Afropop; Indonesian kroncong or dangdut; Vietnamese bolero; Japanese enka or J-pop; Chinese
Mando- or Canto-pop; Korean K-pop; Indian Bollywood music; etc…
Essay length: Minimum 500 words, maximum 600 words. Upload as Word or PDF file. Your essay should
include at a minimum the following information:
1) Musical tradition and some facts of interest regarding its country of origin
2) Brief history, background, and social context/purpose of the chosen music
3) Similarities and contrasts with American pop music
4) Musical sample, including a youtube link and analysis/discussion of the music elements
