The relationship between society’s predominant moral values and the law is complex, as they are often in conflict. When a consensus on a particular issue cannot be reached, the law is tasked with making a decision that reflects the majority opinion of society. This means that laws may not always reflect individual moral beliefs, creating tension and controversy within communities when certain issues come to light.

For example, marijuana has been an ongoing debate for many years now; while some states have legalized its use for medical or recreational purposes, it remains illegal in most other states. Similarly, abortion continues to divide opinions even today; while some believe it should remain legal due to women’s right to choose what happens to their body, others view it as murder and seek to make it illegal. The same can be said for prostitution, gambling and substance abuse; different societies have different views on these topics which leads to disagreements when legislation needs to be passed about them.
