Mitosis and meiosis are two different types of cell division that produce genetically distinct daughter cells. Mitosis produces daughter cells with the same genetic information as the parent cell, while meiosis produces daughter cells with a unique combination of genetic information from both parents. During mitosis, a single parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells, which are used for growth and tissue repair. During meiosis, two parent cells divide into four non-identical gametes or sex cells (eggs and sperm) that contain a unique combination of genetic material from each parent.

The origins of genetic variations come from changes in DNA sequences called mutations. Mutations can be caused by environmental factors such as radiation, chemicals, or viral infections; mistakes during DNA replication; or random errors in cellular processes such as recombination or crossing over during meiosis. These mutations can result in differences in appearance, behavior, and physiology between individuals within a species (National Institute of General Medical Sciences 2020). Thus, they can contribute to the diversity needed to drive evolution through natural selection. Meiotic recombination is one form of mutation that shuffles gene combinations passed on from generation to generation providing new possibilities for different traits within species (Keightley & Otto 2006). Therefore understanding how meiosis works is crucial for understanding how populations adapt to their environment over time.
