What does it mean to be “Chicano/a”? Does the term serve as a mechanism of inclusion or exclusion? If so, who gets to participate in the Chicano/a community or communities and to what extent? Each student is asked to explore what a Chicano/a community is. What does it look, feel, sound like, etc. to you? Find a community that best encompasses what your meaning of Chicano/a community is and describe it. The purpose of this project is not to identify as a member of such a community but simply to explore what this means to you based on your lived experiences. Perhaps you consider yourself as an insider in this community or perhaps you feel as an outsider. In any case, using a sociological lens, explain what makes it a Chicano/
community. We are learning that place can be a social construction as well as geographic, cultural and even imaginary. How have your lived experiences informed your notions of what a Chicano/a community is? Have you been part of this community or not? Explain. Review the articles we have read and the films/short clips to determine your understanding of what a Chicano/a community is.
