My values have always been an integral part of my decisions on which groups, organizations, or career opportunities I decide to be a part of. This is because I believe that if my personal values do not align with those of the organization, it is unlikely that I will be able to reach my full potential and contribute in the most effective way possible. As stated by Peter F. Drucker in his article “Managing Oneself”: “The right job means more than being successful; it also means finding satisfaction within one’s value system. It means living up to one’s own ideas about what matters and what does not matter and doing work accordingly.”

In considering a group, organization or career opportunity that I wish to become involved in, one of the first things I look for is whether their mission and values are similar or complimentary to mine. If they are not aligned with my personal values then this could potentially lead me down the wrong direction, resulting in frustration and dissatisfaction with my work as well overall purpose in life. As such, when evaluating any opportunity it is important for me to consider how closely related the company’s mission statement and culture are to my own views on life since these factors play a large role in how much meaningful contributionI can make towards achieving success together – both personallyand professionally speaking.

Additionally, understanding how your individual skills match up with an organization’s goals can provide insight into whether you should pursue a particular opportunity or not – as alludedto by Drucker: “What one does well – even very well and successfully – may not fit with one’s value system… Knowing where one belongs can help people avoid frustration from trying things outside their realm”. Recognizing this has enabled me to focus on opportunities where there is already a natural alignment between myself and an employer or project team so that I may usemy strengthsin order tobetter supportthe collective effortswithin the organization while simultaneously fulfillingmy own objectivesalongsideit.
