While watching the video, take notes so that you can base your analysis on observed facts.
An observed fact can be an image of the video, a sentence pronounced by one of the research
participants, or a comment from the presenter. To get credit for this assignment, you must write a
analysis of the video where your main task will be to identify the social psychology concepts that
explain the behaviors of the participants in the study.
Please keep in mind that you are expected to present your perspectives in an academic fashion using
social psychology concepts as references. This necessity can be explained for the five (5) reasons
that follow: In psychology, relying exclusively in personal opinions and experiences is unscientific as
1) personal opinions are idiosyncratic and cannot possibly be objective, 2) what is personal is never
universal or generalizable, 3) personal experiences cannot be measured or 4) proven right or wrong.
Finally, 5) in psychology all perspectives must rely on science as unscientific methods of exploration
are judged subjective and unethical. +800 words, citation format is APA
The video “Love Unlimited in Scotland” is a documentary about a research study carried out by Dr. Chris McManus of University College London which involved the exploration of love and marriage, specifically romantic relationships between couples from different ethnic backgrounds in Scotland. The main objective of the study was to understand how intermarriage affected long-term commitment and valorization. In this video, Dr. McManus explains that due to global migration, cultural diversity has grown significantly and mixed marriages have become much more common than before; however, not much is known about its implications for social relationships and marriage dynamics. Throughout the various interviews with participants within the research project it can be clearly observed that multiple social psychology concepts are present throughout their behaviors and experiences.
Another relevant principle used throughout this film was Cultural Relativism which suggests that moral values vary across cultures leading individuals within a society ascribe different meanings depending on their beliefs and customs (Horton 1976). We could observe some examples during one particular scene when one couple compared their respective approaches towards child rearing while they discussed if parenting techniques were universal across cultures highlighting relativism at play since each partner believed different methods worked better for themselves due this being dependent on how each culture viewed acceptable parenting practices(Kakar 2007). Additionally during another segment two women described how they struggled initially after marrying someone outside their faith; here we could see Cultural Relativism influencing their conversations too since both women had conflicting perspectives regarding religious beliefs yet still managed to maintain relations underlining the importance of understanding different points of views rather than imposing own principles unto others hence confirming Horton’s view point(Horton 1976) .
Additionally Operant Conditioning plays an important role in developing our interpersonal relationships where rewards and punishments directly affect our behaviour influencing us positively or negatively(Skinner 1948) Similarly during this documentary we can find evidence suggesting reinforcement led several participants develop stronger bonds either due rewards received for loving acts performed ;for example one interviewee mentioned how he felt thankful whenever her wife cooked meals for him explaining how important gestures like these made him appreciate her more even though previously he found himself taking her kindnesses for granted demonstrating impact rewards have over human behaviour(Chiarello et al 1982 ). Furthermore another participant revealed she enjoyed travelling together with her husband indicating reward based activities lead couples connect better therefore strengthening ties between them further demonstrating explanation proposed Skinner’s theory(Skinner 1948).
In conclusion psychological theories provide numerous insights into why humans behave differently across various situations ranging from parent-child interaction , marital dynamics etc..This video highlighted various phenomenon such as attitude formation , self concept development ,cultural relativism ,rewards based conditioning etc ..which shaped behaviours exhibited by participants testifying deptheth potential psychology holds when trying unravel mysteries behind human actions making psychlogical insight invaluable tool today’s world.
