Welcome to today’s presentation on correctional facilities in the United States! I will be discussing the case of Mike Tyson, outlining his crimes and which type of correctional institution he served or is serving his sentence. Furthermore, we will discuss the effectiveness of this particular type of facility for Tyson’s situation and compare it to another type of correctional facility. Lastly, a hypothetical situation will be provided where Tyson’s crimes could result in an alternative form of punishment.
Slide 2: Mike Tyson Crimes
Mike Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and sentenced to six years in prison. He was released after three years due to good behavior. As a result, he spent his time incarcerated at a state prison.

There are many types of correctional institutions available across the United States, including jails, prisons, halfway houses and more. Jails are short-term detention centers meant for people awaiting trial or sentencing while prisons house inmates who have already been convicted and sentenced with longer terms than what would fit within jail standards. Halfway houses provide transitional services as individuals near release from incarceration and reintegrate into society again.
