Discussion 1: Internet Protocol Suite
For computers to communicate with one another, information has to be bundled and each computer has to have a known address. Think of a post office with many mailbox addresses to serve. How does the post office know to which mailbox to deliver a letter? There is specific information on each letter with zip code, state, city, and street address. It is the same with transferring information from one computer to another. The difference is that, with computers, you use protocols to bundle up the information and send it to the correct computer that needs that information.

The Internet protocol suite is a collection of communications protocols commonly used in networks. Although this suite is commonly known as TCP/IP, these are only two of the many protocols necessary for network communications.

For this Discussion, conduct research through the Internet and the Walden Library on Internet protocol suite. Choose one such protocol to share with the class. Use your post title to identify your chosen protocol so that it is easy for others both to know what your post is about and to scan quickly to identify what protocols have already been explained in the Discussion.

Post by Day 3 both the acronym and the full name for the protocol you have selected and explain how the protocol is used. Also, explain what information is transferred by the protocol. Be sure to mention the layer at which the protocol operates and describe what happens at that layer.

Respond by Day 6 to at least two of your colleagues’ postings, which have different protocols from the one you have chosen, in one or more of the following ways:

Provide a comparison between your colleagues’ protocol and the protocol you described in your post. Describe the difference between the information transported by the protocol in your colleague’s post and by the protocol in your post.
Provide a comparison of the platforms (i.e., Windows, Apple, Unix) required for the protocol in your colleagues’ post and by the protocol in your post.
