Infancy and Early Childhood Socialization
Drawing on the Yoder (1999) reading on infancy and early childhood socialization, please answer all of the following questions:
(1) Describe 3-4 ways in which gender socialization issues are related to physical health.
(2) Think about the way you were raised as an infant (if you know) or young child. What events or experiences do you think played a role in your gender identity and/or behaviors now? Were there things you wish you could have changed? What ways might you raise your children the same or differently?
(3) How does this reading relate to you personally and to your career plans? Remember, gender and sex are deeply interwoven into our lives; no matter what your intended career, there is some kind a link. Be specific!
– How are males and females treated differently from birth? How can these differences be quite consistent and powerful?
– What are implications of even simple differences such as clothing and toy choices?
– How does the idea of gender socialization play out in Social Learning Theory?
– Modeling (who children are most likely to imitate and implications for aggression differences)
– Reinforcement (how genders are reinforced differently in subtle and not so subtle ways)
– What are implications of parental teaching and teacher treatment?
– What about TV exposure and other influences on kids?
– What do you think about the idea of gender schema?
