Improving patient care and outcomes is paramount to the practice of nursing. As we conclude the learning journey through our world of research and evidence-based practice, please reflect on the following:
• Think about nursing practice and describe one barrier that you think prohibits nurses from engaging in EBP; share one strategy you could use to facilitate the use of evidence to help improve +300 words
One major barrier that can prevent nurses from engaging in effective evidence-based practice (EBP) is the lack of resources available to both healthcare professionals and organizations. This includes access to the most current research, technology, databases, and other specialized equipment needed for quality care. Moreover, due to financial constraints, many facilities are unable to provide sufficient academic support or time off for professional development opportunities that would allow nurses to stay abreast of advances in their field.
A strategy I could use to help facilitate the use of evidence-based practice is by creating a culture that encourages nurses to continuously pursue knowledge through continuing education and staying up-to-date with current research. Educating staff on the importance of EBP and providing clear expectations while also emphasizing its value will encourage them to engage in the process which can improve patient outcomes as well as benefit their professional development. In addition, it could be beneficial if organizations implemented a system or protocol where staff members were able to easily access databases such as PubMed and Cochrane Library with relevant information related specifically for their specialties – this would not only make it easier for nurses but also save valuable time during care delivery. Finally, ensuring adequate budgeting so healthcare facilities are able to provide necessary supplies and technological resources is vital; this way there are minimal obstacles when it comes down implementation new practices into daily routine.
