In a field study or an in-the-wild study, how could designers ensure they acquire accurate data concerning the product? Briefly describe some concerns associated with properly conducting field and in-the-wild studies.
How could designers ensure they acquire accurate data
Some potential concerns associated with properly conducting field studies include: sample bias due to non-representative groups; human subject protections; obtaining proper permissions from stakeholders if necessary; contamination of results due to researcher presence; ensuring accurate recording of data at the time of collection; fatigue of participants if too many studies are being conducted back-to-back; lack of control over variables that could influence observations or survey responses; and difficulty generalizing findings to other contexts outside the context/environment studied. In regards to in-the-wild studies, similar concerns may arise but additional issues, such as loss or inaccuracy of data during remote research sessions, need also be addressed.
