The U.S. government serves a protective purpose, and all laws are intended to safeguard the public from harm. Regulations are authorized specifically in legislation creating the law. Enforcement of the law and related regulations is accomplished by regulatory agencies. For this week’s assignment, you will research 2 federal agencies that play a prominent role in regulating different segments of the health care industry in our country.
1. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. It also oversees the manufacture, marketing and distribution of tobacco products. Additionally, it has oversight of dietary supplements as well as food labeling claims.
2. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): CMS is a federal agency under the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). It administers two programs: Medicare which assists in providing health insurance to people over 65 years old or with certain disabilities; and Medicaid which helps provide healthcare coverage to low-income individuals who qualify based on income level or other criteria. CMS sets regulations regarding eligibility requirements for both programs as well as rules governing provider reimbursement rates from providers such as physicians, hospitals and nursing homes.
