Opening a group home for people with disabilities is an idea that I have been passionate about for many years. This type of business will provide a safe, supportive environment where those with disabilities can live happily and independently while receiving the necessary care and attention they need. Group homes are residential facilities that offer housing, personal care services, access to medical assistance, and other life-enriching activities to individuals with special needs (McBride & Tappan, 2018). When opening this type of business there is much planning involved including researching state regulations related to licensing requirements. It is important to become familiar with the laws governing health care organizations in each state before progressing further (Krupa et al., 2017). Additionally it is important to make sure the location you select meets zoning requirements such as allowing adequate space between houses or having enough parking available (Krupa et al., 2017). After obtaining all necessary licenses it is time determine staffing needs which may include managers hired directly by the company or contracted workers such as nursing assistants or certified psychiatric technicians (McBride & Tappan, 2018) Finally it’s time to set rates based on services provided since “in most cases reimbursement of expenses comes from Medicaid waivers or private payment”(Usdin 2007 p. 327 ).
