Gays in the Military: The Right to Serve
For centuries, members of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community have fought for the right to openly serve in the military and receive equal treatment. Unfortunately, many countries still maintain policies that explicitly prohibit their citizens from serving if they identify as LGBT or are openly supportive of those individuals. Despite this fact, an increasing number of nations are beginning to recognize the value that these individuals can bring to their armed forces. This essay will argue that allowing gays in the military is both a morally justifiable decision and one that will benefit all parties involved; it should be adopted by all militaries worldwide.
One compelling argument for permitting gays in the military is simply fairness. It seems unjust and un-democratic for any government to forcibly exclude a person based on their sexual orientation when others with similar skillsets may be allowed entry into service roles. On a basic level this form of discrimination violates human rights and contradicts values of equality throughout society. Furthermore, if an individual is willing to risk their life defending their country then surely they should be allowed to do so regardless of who they love or how they identify themselves? Denying someone access based upon something outside of their control not only fails basic principles such as justice but it also denies them opportunities which would otherwise be available were it not for prejudice towards certain groups within society.
In addition allowing gays into military service has been proven beneficial due to its positive implications throughout various aspects of operations. Firstly retention rates tend to increase when personnel feel accepted by colleagues regardless of who they are or where they come from; having more personnel means more resources at hand meaning greater operational efficiency through increased numbers alone without even considering other potential benefits such as improved morale among servicemen/women etcetera .Secondly ,exclusionary policies pertaining specifically towards LGBT individuals create environments where discrimination against minority groups can exist unchallenged – something which could impair morale further down the line potentially leading serious negative consequences across wider areas such close combat units etcetera .
