Assignment Questions
1. What’s happening to the global beer market in the early decades of the 21st century? Where do the greatest opportunities lie? Where are the greatest risks or threats?
2. How well is EBC positioned to take advantage of these trends? What are its major strengths in exploiting the opportunities? What are its key vulnerabilities?
The case study analysis can be broken down into the following steps:
1. Background analysis where you identify the most important facts surrounding the case.
2. Problem Statement where you identify the key issue or issues
While you answer the questions above, try to emphasize the following core lessons:
– Illustrate the link between changing industry dynamics and the development of a global strategy. The case provides an opportunity to draw out some of the forces driving and constraining the need for cross-market coordination to gain economies of scale and scope versus the imperative for local market differentiation and responsiveness.
– Notice how companies decide on and implement the allocation of roles and responsibilities between headquarters and subsidiaries. Illustrate the tensions that can occur in creating effective headquarter-subsidiary relationships and key means of managing the ongoing issues to maintain them.
– Illustrate the difficulty of converting broad strategic intent into specific operating decisions. The case provides a good example of how companies’ strategic competencies and organizational capabilities are most often built decision by decision, rather than imposed through grand strategic plans or organizational designs.
You should structure your paper in APA 7 format. If you do cite the text, case, class materials, etc., please give credit where credit is due by using in-text citations. In this case, you will also have to include a reference page.
In addition to the case study, students are required to utilize at least 5 sources. At least one of the sources should be from a peer-reviewed journal. Quality case study reports are usually between 6 to 10 pages written, not including visuals such as spreadsheets, tables, figures, and graphs.
