Essay Question
1. Gordon Lafer in The One Percent Solution analyzes corporate lobbying to reduce
government taxes and regulation, to privatize public services, to weaken unions and to
promote the privatization of schools. According to Lafer, how were corporations able to
accomplish these goals? Then use Erik Loomis’ book, A History of America in Ten
Strikes, to draw lessons for how U.S. workers have effectively challenged corporate
power in the past. In your opinion, is the Loomis book still relevant for the present
circumstance of U.S. workers?
