At its core, emotional intelligence involves self-awareness—being able to accurately perceive your own emotional states—as well as empathy for the thoughts and feelings of other people. An emotionally intelligent person is not only aware of their own emotions but can also read social cues from those around them; they take feedback from others into account when making decisions; they can handle conflicts calmly; and they strive for mutual understanding on difficult issues. All these skills help foster successful relationships between individuals as well as in groups such as teams at work or family members living together at home.
High levels of EI have been associated with success in many areas including leadership positions, academic achievement, career advancement opportunities, better job satisfaction ratings among employees , improved physical health outcomes ,and even overall life satisfaction .
