When evaluating the effectiveness of a behavioral program, there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration. These include the objectives and goals of the program, the appropriateness of assessment methods used to measure progress, whether relevant data is collected in an accurate and reliable manner, any changes in behavior as a result of implementation and/or participation in the program, and any ethical considerations associated with administering or participating in such programs (Lloyd et al., 2020). Documentation such as questionnaires or surveys completed by participants before and after their involvement can also be used to assess behaviour change (Kang & Fabiano, 2019). Additionally, records relating to attendance at sessions should also be maintained so that trends over time can be observed (Carey et al., 2017).
Three examples of acceptable goals for improvement that could apply to me when doing supervised fieldwork include becoming more familiar with different strategies for working with diverse populations including those from culturally diverse backgrounds; gaining experience facilitating group therapy sessions; and improving my communication skills when interacting with clients. One particular goal I have set for myself relative to the 5th Edition Task List Item 2.04: “Implement evidence-based interventions appropriate for client age group” is to become familiar with research-supported approaches for working with children aged 8-14. This goal was chosen because it aligns directly with this task list item which requires social workers to implement interventions suited for their client’s age group through knowledge gained from research literature. Furthermore, my current practice setting includes a large number of youth aged 8-14 which necessitates an understanding of any potential challenges they may face due to their developmental stage combined with evidence-based approaches recommended by professional organizations such as The American Psychological Association (APA) or The National Association Of Social Workers (NASW) (APA n.d.; NASW n.d.). Ultimately developing competency in assessing age related issues while implementing effective interventions designed specifically for adolescents will allow me provide better services during my field placement.
