Osteoarthritis is a chronic joint disorder of the skeletal system. It is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, which is the protective tissue that cushions bones in joints. This can cause pain and stiffness in affected areas like hands, hips, knees and spine. In severe cases, it may lead to bone damage and deformity (1).
Osteoarthritis mostly affects people over 50 years old but younger individuals can also be affected due to injury or hereditary factors (2). The symptoms include joint swelling and tenderness, decreased range of motion, feverish feeling around joints at night or after exercise (3).

The diagnosis of osteoarthritis usually involves physical examination, imaging such as X-rays or MRI scans looking for wear and tear on joint surfaces as well as laboratory tests ruling out other conditions with similar symptoms such as rheumatoid arthritis(4). Treatment includes medications such nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids injections into the affected joint or viscosupplementation using hyaluronic acid injections (5). Exercise should also be encouraged to manage pain while maintaining mobility and strength in muscles surrounding aching joints(6)(7) . Surgery may be recommended if other treatments fail to provide relief 8 ).
