A semi-colon is used to connect two independent clauses which are closely related; a colon is used to introduce a list, explanation or quotation; and a dash can be used either to add emphasis or separate parts of a sentence. For example
We had been planning our trip for months – despite all the obstacles, we were determined to go; our itinerary was simple: three days in Paris, four days in Rome, and five days in London; upon arriving home from such an incredible journey—we could not have been more satisfied.
