The 1950s were a time of cultural and economic change in the United States. Common narratives of this era focus on such trends as mass suburbanization, a growing middle class, generational divides around cultural expression, and growing fears around the Cold War and the nuclear age. Lingering over this was the experience of recent participation in two wars. Towards the end of the 1950s, works of literature and film turned their lens of criticism towards many of these trends. A great example of this is the 1956 film The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, based on a bestselling 1955 novel of the same title. For this assignment, please view this film. Based on your reading of the textbook, discuss in at least 1 page the commentary this film is offering on American cultural, social, and/or economic life in the 1950s.
