Rationale: In the last few decades, healthcare systems have seen rapid technological advancement, including the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI). Although this technology can be beneficial for patient care, it also raises ethical concerns. These include ensuring fair and equitable access to healthcare resources, the safety of patients who are using these technologies, privacy issues related to the storage and sharing of patient data, as well as potential disparities in how AI affects different populations. Additionally, with AI being so new and complex there is a need for proper governance so that its use is ethically sound. Therefore it is important that we develop comprehensive standards regarding the use of AI in healthcare settings as soon as possible.
Vision Statement: Without adequate ethical standards surrounding AI’s use in healthcare settings, patients may be at risk for receiving inequitable care or experiencing data breaches due to inadequate security protocols surrounding their personal information. Furthermore, certain populations may not benefit from advancements made by AI if they do not have access to those services or if algorithmic bias exists within those systems. On the other hand, if we are able to create effective guidelines outlining acceptable uses for this technology while protecting individual rights such as privacy and autonomy then everyone will benefit from improved quality of care due to increased accuracy provided by these methods. This would lead to better health outcomes across all demographics which could revolutionize medical practice worldwide.
