1.Citations: Please make sure you provide parenthetic citations (MLA style works) any time you directly
reference the text, whether it is by quotation or if you are just referencing information. If you only reference
the reader, you can just use simple parenthetic citations by page number. Ie. if you are citing page 12, just cite
like this (12). If you are using both the textbook at the reader, use last names like this (Prothero 13) or this
(Laycock and Mikles 20). If you cite outside sources, please also include a bibliography for those sources.
There is no expectation you use outside sources.
2.Examine the readings and see where you find comparisons.
- Quotation: Open by providing a quotation of the passage you will discuss in this assignment. You don’t need
to include everything you reference, but enough so that we have a basis for discussion. Please make sure you
either use quotation marks or set off the quotation with block quotes, and provide a parenthetic citation. - Summary: Follow this with a summary, in your own words, of what you think this passage is saying. If there
are technical terms of ideas that are unique to this religion, explain them to your reader, again in your own
terms. - Context: Discuss what the text is that you are quoting, and where it fits into the larger religion? Is it from a
particular author or era? Does it represent a particular perspective of that religion, or is it from a text whose
importance is generally shared? What does this context for the text help us understand about this passage? - Understanding: Discuss what you think the passage helps us understand more about this religion? What
does it show us? What do we learn by reading this text that we might miss if we just used the textbook or a
general information source like that for understanding the religion? - Meaning: Discuss what you think is most interesting and meaningful from this passage for us as human
beings, whether we are part of this religion or not. This may be something about the ideas or teachings that
you think are worthy of consideration by anyone, or it may be something we learn about human beings and
how they experience their world in the context of religion.
