Cleaner environment

Suppose that instead of developing cars and trucks with internal combustion engines that consume gasoline
and diesel fuel, the companies who make those vehicles had poured all their research for the past hundred
years to making vehicles powered by electricity. Would we now have a much cleaner environment?
