Explain the difference between the following rhetorical concepts: exigency and purpose. How can a reader/viewer establish an author’s exigence? Purpose? Using either Lubrano’s or Rodriguez’s work, explain what you think the author’s exigence and purpose were and explain clearly how the text informs that explanation.

According to Rodriguez (the rhetor), what role does language play in public and private lives, and how is language important in both education and relationships (his thesis)? Explain how he supports this argument. What aspect is most convincing to you as an audience member?

Rodriguez explores his own background with language, and he is opposed to bilingual education, something which shocked many when his book was published and he spoke openly about his views. First, how does he define bilingual education, and second, how does he establish his opposition, including anything from actual content to more subtle rhetorical moves, his referring to bilingual ed as a “scheme,” for example? Lastly, why do you think people were surprised at his stance on Bilingual education, and what do you learn from his stance?

Explain which course material provides the most explicit and in which one you find an implicit line. Which approach is most effective and why
