It is essential for nurses to advocate for patients by ensuring they understand research consent forms before signing them. To determine if a patient understands a research consent form and how the research trial or study will affect them, independent informed consent must be employed. This includes providing adequate information in an understandable language that the patient can comprehend, allowing sufficient time for the patient to review and ask questions about the research project, and obtaining written confirmation from each participant (Roush et al., 2019). The nurse should ensure that potential participants are free to refuse participation at any point during the process whenever desired.
Educational handouts or media are also helpful when informing patients about potentially risky clinical trials. Visual aids like diagrams help explain complex topics more quickly which decreases confusion among those being asked for consent (Gillespie-Smith et al., 2020). Videos featuring realistic scenarios with actors portraying clinical staff engaging in conversations similarly depicting real life examples of ethical dilemmas within clinical contexts have been found useful in teaching informed decision making as well as other ethical issues related to health care practice scientifically grounded by evidence based practice guidelines (Miyake et al., 2013). Information should also be provided verbally since some populations prefer verbal explanations over printed materials(Tengland et al., 2014) In conclusion comprehensive education options must be used together including visuals aid, verbal explanation along with ample opportunity dialogue is needed when attempting obtain truly informed decision making from research participants.
