Values that ensure a culture of safety include open communication, collaboration, respect for all individuals regardless of their background or level in an organization and trust. Healthcare facilities can establish a culture of safety by creating an environment where healthcare workers feel safe to speak up about potential hazards, investing in patient safety initiatives and educating health care staff about the importance of patient safety (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, 2020). The nurse’s role in maintaining a culture of safety includes advocating for patients’ rights to receive safe care free from harm, speaking up when there is something unsafe happening or likely to happen and reporting any instances of medical errors or near misses (Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality [AHRQ], 2018).
