The Jew as the original “Other”: Difference, Anti-Semitism, and Race
In studying the Jewish “Other” we saw how Jews were classified as “Other” by Christians, Muslims, and other cultural groups. Despite the pain of this “othering” mostly due to their religious practices, many Jewish people would later come to classify themselves as not only as a Religious Group, but also as a distinct RACE of people. Acknowledging what we have learned this semester about “Doing Race” and the essay on “The Jew as the original “Other”: Difference, Anti-Semitism, and Race,” REFLECT on this idea. How does (or did) such a belief work FOR the Jewish people as an “other” in American society? Also, how does (or did) it work AGAINST them as an identified “other in American society?
