The verbal communication concept addressed in the reading is cultural appropriateness. This refers to being able to recognize and consider cultural differences when communicating in an intercultural setting, as well as being mindful of potential misinterpretations due to these differences.
This concept can have both positive and negative impacts on communication and gospel witness in an intercultural setting. On the one hand, by recognizing the different habits of speech within different cultures, one can avoid miscommunication or misunderstanding based on any particular culture’s norms. For example, a speaker from a collectivist culture might be more likely to speak in terms of “we” while someone from an individualist culture may take a more individualistic approach with regards to their own words and actions. Knowing this difference ahead of time allows for better understanding between members of different cultures during conversations related to the gospel message.
In conclusion, paying attention to cultural appropriateness is essential when communicating across cultures if one wishes for their message to be truly understood by all parties involved with clarity instead of having it become distorted through lack of awareness regarding socio-linguistic cues unique among each culture group present at any conversation involving differing worldviews such as those which exist between Christians and non-Christians alike engaging in discussions related to spiritual matters like faith and salvation provided through Jesus Christ alone according religious scripture like The Bible (Author Unknown).
