Culture Clash is a Chicano American performance troupe composed of the writer-comedians Herbert Sigüenza, Richard Montoya and
Ric Salinas. Together they created works ranging from comedic skits to full-length plays and screenplays, all of which featured
political or social satire since the 1984.
Satire is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses and shortcomings are held up
to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement; the use of
humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary
politics and other topical issues.
How do these satirical skits address societal issues using surface stereotypes? What might be the deeper message?
1. Don Colon – Godfather / American history
2. Chuy – Armchair Revolutionist / Ernesto “Che” Guevara – Revolutionist
3. Abuélo / Gun violence
4. Chicanos on the Storm / Cultural straitjacket
5. Jaime Escalante / Stand & Deliver Pizza
6. End Song – We’re Culture Clash and “We’re here to Stay” versus “Confused and Full of Rage” / Choice
7. Apologize for the visual and sound quality, yet was the information, via satire, relevant to your understanding and willingness
for discussion about these topics? Why or why not?
