Students will formulate a research question and, using a mixture of primary and secondary sources, write a
research essay of 4,000-4,500 words excluding bibliography. This can be a study of a period or key event (e.g.
sodomy in Victorian court records or the politics of ACT UP during the 1980s AIDS crisis). Or it can be a
historiographical review essay, focusing on how historians have addressed a key topic or eras. You will need to
watch two documentaries, the How to survive a plague and the United in ager: A history of ACT UP to
understand how the organisation of ACT UP was represented. You can find them on YouTube, but if you need
any help, please let me know. The department is History, Classics and Archaeology and the professor is a
historian. So, there should reference from historians.
