More than 50 years ago Kitty Genovese was murdered and allegedly 38 witnesses failed to stop the murder by Winston Mosely or call the police. This led to research into the bystander effect and the reasons that people are often reluctant to help. Review the videos and then think about whether you would want to assist anyone you saw in need. What would make you help and what would make you walk away? What factors would make you stop and what factors would make you keep walking. Have you ever stopped to help someone in need? If you did why? If you didn’t why? How would you feel if no one stopped to help you?
