The Effects of Racism on the Economic Development of Texas City, USA
Introduction
According to Omi & Winant (2014), the issue of racism in the US has continuously resulted in inequality, especially for minority races and groups. Racism is perpetrated mostly by the white community who view the minority races such as the Hispanic, Africans as illegal immigrants and foreigners. Despite the country boasting of elite people, Miller & Garran (2017) believes there is still a new form of racism being practiced in some cities such as Texas. The continuous racism practice in the country has motivated the study to investigate the effects such kind of racism has on the economy of a city like Texas, USA.
General Research Question
The general research question in this proposal is:
What are the effects of racism on the economic development of Texas?
Economic development captures both qualitative and quantitative aspects that affect the determinants of good quality life such as access to social amenities. Economic development is hence, a wider concept compared to economic growth.
Specific Research Questions
The specific research questions, in this case, are:
- How does racism in workplaces affect the economic development of Texas people?
- How does racism in schools affect the economic development of Texas people?
Methodology
The use of interviews would be the best method of data collection for this proposal. Interviews will consider the fact that data will be collected from students in schools, as well as, employees in various workplaces. Interviews ensure participants are directly involved when collecting the data. According to Brinkmann (2014), interviews are the most accepted forms of collecting qualitative data because they provide room for accurate screening; hence ensuring accurate data is generated and proper time management. The carrying out of interviews create room for face-to-face interactions with the respondents, which helps in capturing all cues from the respondents, whether non-verbal or verbal. Additionally, interviews provide the opportunity to determine if the respondents are honest or dishonest. The interviews provide chances to respondents to elaborate on their responses. Data elaboration improves the quality of the information to be provided. Good quality data would make data analysis, comparisons and evaluations easier. Using interviews will help in choosing the best respondents, in terms of qualifications.
Limitations of interviews
With the use of interviews, it would be hard to keep good records, especially considering that most of the interviews would be oral. Racism is a critical issue that would require the provision of a lot of information by respondents. Racism has the capability of affecting the emotional well-being of respondents, and some of the respondents would not feel comfortable putting their names, ages, and places of residences on record. The provision of biased information is common with the use of interviews because it would be hard to identify the characters of the respondents based on the first appearance. Some of the respondents might be racists without the knowledge of the interviewer; thus making the provision of biased information easier. In addition, the respondents might end up fearing criticism from their employers or colleagues (Alsaawi, A. (2014), even though they might have been directly affected by racism at their workplaces. The fear will mislead them to provide inaccurate data. Interviews, in most cases, invades the privacy of people. The respondents might not be comfortable with the
