Racial Justice and Equality is a topic that hits close to home for all of us living in the United States. Race relations around the world vary widely, with some regions/countries showing higher or lower opinions of racial outgroup members than others. A culture’s socio-political history can be a significant contributor to opinions and treatment of others just as broader cultural factors can.
Goal of Assignment:
For this paper, you will explore race relations in another country in the context of our discussion on the self, personality and individualism-collectivism. Race relations are clearly complex. None of us can succinctly explain how and why attitudes, behaviors and policies explain the state of race relations in our country. Your goal is not to provide the full rationale or the solution – just some insight from our understanding of individualism-collectivism and self-concept that might influence the state of race relations in another country.
First, you will discuss the levels of individualism-collectivism in your country/region of choice. You can find some of this information in our text book and/or lecture slides. You might do a little more research online if you need further details. Then, you will explore some general findings on the race relations that exist in the country. You can find some of this information on sites like Wikipedia (be mindful of credible sourcing there), and official sites of Embassies or State Departments. You do not need to be exhaustive in your discussion, just enough to characterize qualities like tension, acceptance and/or tolerance of any minority group. Finally, you will provide an explanation of how you believe that cultural factors may
influence these characteristics.
