. Gulliver’s Feelings Regarding His Treatment

In his phenomenal fictional piece, Jonathan Swift engages his readership in an enticing first-person narrative of Lemuel Gulliver’s travels into remote regions of the earth. Gulliver’s travels give him the unique opportunity to encounter creatures of distinct races including Lilliputian dwarfs, Brobdingnag giants, Laputa’s peculiar humans, and the land of intelligent horses known as Houyhnhnms (Swift, n.d). While his experience in each nation was quite different, they all treated him with magnificence and interest. Considering the limiting scope of this essay, emphasis will be placed on his interaction with the first two nations in chapters 1 and 2.

            His rewarding experience in the land of Lilliputians is fairly portrayed in lines 118-120 of the first chapter. Gulliver asserts that “I now considered myself as bound by the laws of hospitality to a people who had treated me with so much expense and magnificence (Swift, n.d).” This kind of treatment was largely attributable to the Lilliputian’s gentle nature as well as the value he offered during his stay in their island. A similar experience is evidenced in Brobdingnag, when the giants’ queen adopts him as her favorite dwarf. In lines 35-37 of the fourth chapter of the second part, Gulliver comments on how he was “known and esteemed among the greatest officers” on account of “her majesty’s favors” (Swift, n.d). He further explains how he considers himself “extremely obliged”, in lines 39-42, to have experienced the splendor and kindness of the royal people in Brobdingnag.

            After a brief exploration of Gulliver’s experience with the foreign races in Lilliputian and Brobdingnag, it is fair to assert that he appreciated their hospitality, and he enjoyed the favors he was accorded by the royal residents in the highlighted regions. Clearly, such experiences enhanced his attitudes towards and value for hospitality.
